Francis Albert Sinatra, conocido universalmente como Frank Sinatra
nació en Hoboken, Nueva Jersey el 12 de diciembre de 1915. Frank era hijo único de emigrantes italianos llegados a Estados Unidos.

A los 15 años abandonó sus estudios de secundaria pare meterse en el mundo que realmente le apasionaba: la música. En 1935, con apenas 20 años, se presentó a un concurso en una emisora de radio, junto a un par de amigos, formando un grupo denominado "The Flashes". De esta manera, ganaron el concurso, lo que les sirvió para darse a conocer. A partir de entonces Frank Sinatra comenzó a actuar en varias emisoras de radio.

Su oportunidad llegó cuando el trompetista Harry James le escuchó cantar en un restaurante. La voz del joven Sinatra le impresionó, así que decidió darle la oportunidad de unirse a su banda. Con "The Music Makers" grabó su primer trabajo, en 1939, titulado "All or Nothing al All". Tras siete meses de trabajo junto a Harry James, dejaría la agrupación y se integra en la orquesta de swing de Tommy Dorsey.

Es precisamente con Dorsey cuando le llega el éxito definitivo a Frank Sinatra, convirtiéndose en un auténtico ídolo para millones de jóvenes y adolescentes. La fama de Sinatra llegó a tal nivel de popularidad que la productora de cine Metro Goldwin Mayer le ofreció un contrato para actuar en varias películas. Su fama continuó aumentando sin parar, uniéndose ahora su imagen con su voz.

En 1942 Frank Sinatra abandona a Dorsey para iniciar su carrera como solista. Lo primero fue firmar un contrato con Capitol Records, en 1954, con quienes graba algunos de sus mejores trabajos: "In The Wee Smal Hours" (1954); "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" (1955) "Swing Easy" (1955), "Songs for Young Lovers" (1955); "A Swingin' Affair" (1957), "Only the Lonely" (1958) y "Come Dance With Me" (1958), con el que consigue un Grammy en 1959 como mejor álbum del año, ganando Sinatra además el Grammy a la mejor interpretación vocal masculina.

Paralelamente a su trabajo como solista, Frank Sinatra mantiene una intensa actividad como actor. Participa en diversas películas, entre ellas "De Aquí a la Eternidad" (1953), "El Hombre con el Brazo Dorado" (1955), "El mensajero del miedo" (1962) y "Alta Sociedad" (1956). Otras películas en las que trabajó en esa época, junto a grandes amigos suyos, como Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, fueron "Ocean's Eleven" (1960), Sergeants 3 (1962), Four for Texas (1963), y Robin and the Seven Hoods (1964).

Para entonces, Frank Sinatra había abandonado ya a su primera esposa, Nancy, con quien se había casado en 1939, y se había vuelto a casar con la actriz Ava Gardner, una relación que también se truncó tras cinco años.

En 1962 Frank Sinatra funda su propio sello discográfico "Reprise". En 1965 el artista recibe un Grammy honorífico, por toda su carrera musical, obteniendo también un Grammy a la mejor interpretación masculina por el tema "It was a very good year". El álbum "September of my years" le vale un tercer Grammy, como mejor álbum del año. Un año después vuelve a recibir un Grammy, esta vez por su tema "Strangers in the night".

UNDER MY SKIN

Mientras su carrera estaba por las nubes, su vida sentimental era un devenir de mujeres y matrimonios. Tras separarse de Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra se casó con Mia Farrow, de quien se divorció dos años después. Su cuarta esposa fue Barbara Jane Blakely Marx, la viuda de Zeppo Marx.

En 1971 anunció su retirada, pero en 1973 reapareció con un nuevo disco. En la década de los ochenta, Sinatra continuó publicando discos y actuando en películas de forma habitual, eso a pesar de sus casi setenta años. En 1988 realizó una gira con Sammy Davis Jr. y Dean Martin, aunque este último tuvo que dejar la gira agotado por los viajes y los conciertos, siendo sustituido por Liza Minnelli.

Al final de su carrera, Frank Sinatra realizó una serie de grabaciones de duetos. Así, en 1993 publica "Frank Sinatra Duets", en el que reedita sus grandes éxitos acompañado por artistas de la talla de Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand y el líder de U2, Bono, entre otros. Un año después aparece "Duets II", con el que Sinatra consiguió un nuevo Grammy, como Mejor Intérprete Vocal Pop. Para este álbum Sinatra contó con la colaboración de Willie Nelson y Neil Diamond entre otros.

En 1996 Sinatra ofrece un memorable concierto en el "Shrine Auditorium" de Los Ángeles, para celebrar sus ochenta años. En el escenario fue acompañado por Bruce Springsteen y Bob Dylan, en lo que sería una de las últimas apariciones públicas de "La Voz".

Frank Sinatra falleció el 14 de mayo de 1998, cuando contaba con 82 años de edad.
